Cool Gadget Quick Look: JooJoo Tablet

Michael Arrington’s TechCrunch on Thursday filed suit against Fusion Garage for what it considers to be “wrongful conduct” regarding the upcoming JooJoo tablet.

Fusion Garage introduced the JooJoo tablet earlier this week. It was initially conceived as the CrunchPad, with backing from Arrington and TechCrunch, but Arrington says that Fusion Garage cut him out of the deal at the last minute. Fusion Garage says that Arrington did not deliver on his promises, so they proceeded without him.

“TechCrunch conceived, initiated, developed, directed, and promoted the CrunchPad project,” according to the suit, which was filed in California district court. “Moreover, TechCrunch supported the CrunchPad project with expertise, talent, oversight, energy, cash, and concrete contributions to the hardware and software development.”

Let’s put aside the legal dispute and appreciate this beautiful gadget. Whoever wins the legal saga doesn’t interest me, the JooJoo tablet will have benefitted from all the publicity.

I like the 12.1 inch screen of the JooJoo tablet which is built with a Webkit based browser and its capacitive touch. On the start page (filled with fanciful icons) of this cool gadget, you just press on an icon or press on a URL bar in the corner and pull up a site.

All the pages are beautiful to look at but it gets troublesome when you want to type with the keyboard which moves around and appears when you need to enter text. The keyboard is also meant to be used with one hand, thus you can’t really type fast.

Overall, the JooJoo tablet is appealing but the price of $499 is rather steep.
