New Radio Frequency Identification Technology Poses Privacy Issues

A new technology Radio Frequency Identification Devices, or RFID, which is replacing barcodes and the bar code system could affect our lives drastically.

RFID enable products to be identified and tracked at any point along the supply chain.” It has the potential to track “everything, everywhere.”

In the past, a product barcode is simply scanned but a RFID chip embedded in the product will stay active, and transmit data about when, where and how you use the product.

RFID chips may even be in our paper currency, which provides a trial of evidence where your money comes from. Prepare for a confiscation if the authorities trace the money to illegal sources even if you earned it honestly.

Even though I am in favor of adopting new technology to improve our lives, I do draw the line when our privacy is at stake. If data like our purchasing and traveling habits, location, lifestyle, financial information are laid in the open for businesses to exploit, there could be some dire consequences down the road.

If you think stricter laws should be passed requiring companies which have RFID chips embedded in product to disclose this information, you can start by writing to Senators about this new technology.
