Microsoft Innovates 3D Technology Without Glasses
Microsoft is innovating 3D technology by ditching 3D glasses, choosing instead to beam images into our eyes. They have created a camera to track viewers’ eyes using a new special lens shaped like a wedge.
The wedge lens can direct light into a viewers eye by turning light-emitting diodes along its bottom edge on and off. By controlling the light, it can display different images on the screen and direct where each image goes.
I am not hung on 3D technology because of the ugly glasses which cost a bomb too. We have to congratulate Microsoft which has often been accused of being anti-innovation as compared to Apple. Now they are spending their R&D money wisely.
The prototype’s limitations is that only 2 people can watch 3D at one time (one image per eye) or 4 people can watch a 2D video. I am also skeptical about the side effects of our eyes being shot in the eye with lazer beams over prolonged periods.
However, if Microsoft continues to research into this 3D laser technology, they could be the first to launch 3D games on the mass market. Coupled with Natal, we could enjoy immersive and interactive 3D games soon.

3d technology is just emerging so I’l wait a couple of years for it to become more affordable.
I am really not into the 3D technology at the moment. Either with or without glasses, they all have bad effects to our eyes. Eye experts said that we should watch only 5-6 hours of 3D movies in a week.
I think it’s a step to change the world =)
At least someone is trying to innovate without using over priced glasses. For 3d to really kick off this is what is needed.
I’m pretty sure it will be VERY FUSSY to what angle you view the display. Which will mean you’ll have to keep your arms holding this little “gameboy” very still, and keep your head and arms in the perfect position.

Definitely 3D technology will become cheaper in the future. Currently, 3D is the hottest technology in the industry.
It is something which consumers love, from movies, TV, video games to magazines (Playboy). 3D is gonna be in your living room whether you like it or not.

Yes, 3D with or without glasses is bad for our eyes. Some people even experience headaches and delusion after watching 3D for too long.
But with so many companies jumping on the bandwagon, 3D technology should improve soon.

Yup, 3D will change the way we look at the world… take out the side effects and nobody will want a 2D TV again.

Microsoft’s innovation will hurt the 3D glasses manufacturers. But I guess nobody will complain if the glasses are phased out eventually.
Hi Paul, this might be cool to try after a few years. I know everyone will be paranoid about this at first, but after a few lawsuits and a couple of disclaimers you never know. LOL! It would be really cool if they could use this technology in cameras so that we could take pictures or make recordings in 3D…
wow…it’s amazing 3d guys…glad to see that
I still think this is a bad idea. Even if they DO manage to somehow give it 3D…it’s a DS. The point is to touch things. Is only one screen going to be 3D? Even further, it’s a handheld. Wouldn’t it make more sense to make a 3D CONSOLE, instead?
That’s amazing! If it doesn’t hurt our eyes, it will be perfect! Thanks for the info.
ya it is the next step of touch screen,, and it is goona rock,,,
it is really exciting to watch 3d movies. i hope that there would be 3d sexy movies too.”;:
