NFL To Adopt Ball Tracking Technology?
Ball tracking technology is not new and has already been implemented for sports like golf and tennis. Recent controversies at World Cup 2010 has also stirred protest over glaring mistakes of match officials.
Goal line technology is being touted as a better substitute for future soccer events. Football could be the next frontier too and NFL fans need not wait for too long.
Dr. Priya Narasimhan, a professor at Carnegie Mellon University and founder of YinzCam (a mobile live streaming technology for sporting events) has designed a ball-tracking technology by using sensors comprising a microprocessor, antenna and a magnetic coil that allows it to be charged wirelessly.
The result is a ball that can be tracked no matter where it is on the field — even under a scrum. Along with allowing officials to locate the ball’s exact location, the technology could be used as a training tool.
There are still some constraints to overcome (like snow and enclosed stadium) though when using wireless technology to track a ball. Nevertheless it is a good start and will allow for fairer results than the current judgmental and guessing game by officials.
