Global 3G iPhones Mania

Friday, July 11th, 2008

Lucky the New Zealanders! They were the first in the world to grab the much hyped iPhone 3G on Friday when three stores opened just after midnight.

Shoppers keen to be among the first to get the new Apple smart phone queued in the main cities of Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch in cold winter temperatures.

Enthusiasm for the new iPhone in New Zealand was tempered by the expensive calling contracts linked to the discounted price for the phone. The cheapest price for the new model iPhone is 199 dollars (150 US) but that price is tied to a two-year calling contract costing 250 dollars a month.

Many potential customers expressed outrage when they heard the pricing but it just reflects the high cost of mobile communications in New Zealand.

Jesse Jackson Apologizes To Obama

Tuesday, July 8th, 2008

Rev. Jesse Jackson apologized Wednesday for saying Barack Obama is “talking down to black people” during what Jackson thought was a private conversation before a FOX News interview Sunday.

Jackson was speaking to a fellow guest at the time about Obama’s speeches in black churches and his support for faith-based charities. Jackson added before going live, “I want to cut his nuts off.”

This is a divisive statement indeed. Did Jackson really mean what he said? Read on.

McCain Says Obama Is “Trustworthy”

Thursday, July 3rd, 2008

John McCain said Barack Obama is trustworthy, even though he has spent the last two weeks portraying his Democratic rival as somebody who can’t keep his word.

Asked if he personally trusts Obama, McCain said: “I’m sure he’s trustworthy. I admire Senator Obama … I will run a respectful campaign with him.”

His campaign has hurled several labels at the Illinois senator — but ever since Obama opted out of public financing for the general election, reneging on a previous pledge to take the money, McCain’s campaign has consistently tried to label him as untrustworthy.

On campaign finance, McCain maintains his stance, saying: ““He broke his word … that’s just a fact. You know, this election is about trust, and trusting people’s word … And unfortunately, apparently on several items, Senator Obama’s word cannot be trusted.”

He continued, “I think Americans want a leader they can trust and have confidence in and I believe that they will more and more see where Senator Obama has switched his positions on fundamental issues.”

McCain spoke with FOX News Thursday in Mexico City, before visiting with Mexican officials and meeting with President Felipe Calderon to discuss illegal immigration. He was in Colombia Tuesday and Wednesday, where he discussed free trade and drug interdiction with President Alvaro Uribe.

Responding to many recent polls that show him trailing Obama, the Arizona senator also said he’s comfortable playing the role of the underdog.

“I think I’ll be the underdog right up until a minute before the polls close in California,” he said. “I think, though, I do best as the underdog.”

High Oil Prices Could Mean Recession

Thursday, June 5th, 2008

High oil prices are driving the U.S. economy into a recession, George Soros, the famous fund manager and commodities investor, told members of the Senate Commerce Committee in testimony Tuesday.

The committee received testimony from a former Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) official, a consumer rights activist, Soros and others in an attempt to find out if oil prices are being manipulated by speculators.

“The rise in oil prices aggravates the prospects for a recession,” Soros told the committee. “Only when a recession is well and truly in place is a decline in consumption likely to outweigh the factors.”

Soros said the potential for “distinctly harmful effects” of a further increase in oil prices makes speculation “intellectually unsound” and “potentially destabilizing.”

Recent investor interest in commodities is an issue of intense debate. Some analysts believe that commodities investors have boosted the price of crude with speculative trading, treating oil as a hedge against inflation due to the weakened dollar. The witnesses agreed that speculation has artificially boosted the price of oil.

“We’re paying, some believe, as high as a 50% premium to the pockets of speculators that are operating in markets that are completely unpoliced,” said Michael Greenburger, a University of Maryland professor and former CFTC official.

Mark Cooper, director of research at consumer rights organization Consumer Federation of America, said $40 of oil’s price is “baloney” and can be chalked up to speculation.

But others say market fundamentals are playing a large role in the doubling of oil prices in a one-year span, driven by strong global demand and a shrinking supply. Oil companies’ role in the escalating price of crude has also come under intense scrutiny lately. Some analysts have accused Big Oil of failing to invest enough of their profits into exploration and drilling.

Last Thursday, the CFTC announced it had launched a wide-ranging probe into oil price manipulation six months ago, saying it would get more information on the effect investors are having on the market. The commission’s public acknowledgment of a normally secret probe has sparked talk that it has evidence oil companies are withholding oil from the market in an attempt to manipulate prices.

Regarding speculators, CFTC has previously said that it had not found any evidence that traders were artificially inflating prices. On the day the CFTC announced its investigation, crude oil futures dropped $4.41 - the third-biggest one-day slide since 1991 - and prices have hovered around that $127-a-barrel level since.

Global Crisis In Soaring Food Prices

Tuesday, May 6th, 2008

A sharp rise in food prices has developed into a global crisis, U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said Friday. Ban said the U.N. and all members of the international community are very concerned, and immediate action is needed.

He spoke to reporters at U.N. offices in Austria, where he was meeting with the nation’s top leaders for talks on how the United Nations and European Union can forge closer ties.

“This steeply rising price of food - it has developed into a real global crisis,” Ban said, adding that the World Food Program has made an urgent appeal for additional $755 million.

“The United Nations is very much concerned, as all other members of the international community,” Ban said. “We must take immediate action in a concerted way all throughout the international community.”

Ban urged leaders of the international community to sit down together on an “urgent basis” to discuss how to improve economic distribution systems and the production of agricultural products.

Enjoy Entertainment On The Go

Sunday, April 27th, 2008

Jobs these days require us to be mobile instead of staying stagnant in a place. Being away from home for long periods, how do we relax and enjoy some entertainment on the move?

Thanks to technological advances, many people can now enjoy multi-media anywhere they want with the use of a portable dvd player. The concept is simple: combine a lightweight DVD player and LCD screen; voila, you can view blockbuster movies to your heart’s desire.

I know getting portable DVD players from retail stores is easy but are there any good online marketplace to hunt for quality, bargain buys? There is actually a fabulous site, Wize.com which showcase the best available portable DVD players including Philips, Toshiba, Audiovox, Coby, Spectroniq, and mustek. Do not worry as these brands scream quality.

I love the service provided by Wize as reviews made by purchasers can be accessed easily. These comments form a good reference for your decisions. The advantage of online purchases over retail is that you can browse products without interruption from pesky sales assistants who are keen to promote certain items to you.

Then when you really buy the product and return home, you find that it doesn’t work to your satisfaction. You call up the store and they say you have to return the product according to their return policy - sign papers, show bills, bring it back down to them… all a waste of a time!

At Wize, you get the benefit of good experiences from shoppers who have purchased the items before. If the product is no good, it will be reflected in its Wize Rank.

For those who travel long distances and need a healthy entertainment, then a portable DVD player is a must. Put on a good head phone, enjoy the movie and you forget your tiring journey.

Decorating Your Home To Increase Value

Friday, April 18th, 2008

I think of all the things which you can add value to your home, like retrofitting with new fixtures, furniture, lightings, tilings, painting, cabinets, wardrobes, etc, Decorative Planters are the best option. It is a long term investment, $1 spend on plants can add much more (at least $10) to your property, once they are grown out.

Having a garden in your house can add charisma and a pleasant vibe to an otherwise dull and gloomy house. By using planters, your family members benefit from the extra oxygen and lesser carbon dioxide around the house. There are many online sites where you can shop for planters - PlanterIxchange.com is one of them and it is worth checking out because of their extensive products and affordable prices.

If you think your house is not as attractive as your neighbor’s, and hence command a lower selling price, I believe the problem is caused to a large extent by the quality of landscaping. Outdoor Planters which can be used in houses of any design and are also flexible in size are the key to transforming your ordinary house into an elegant setting.

If you want natural air filters in your home, there is nothing better than putting a few Indoor Planters like spider plants, peace lilies, chrysanthemums, aloes, and pothos at strategic locations. They are extremely effective at removing impurities from the air.

Planterixchange realize that every homeowner’s needs is unique and they desire their own special little corners. That’s why there are so many mind-boggling choices on the site. All the accessories offered are creatively designed and are high quality.
