In what will be seen as a media coup, Britain’s Guardian Media Group bought the company that runs the high-profile digital media news site paidContent for a price “north of $30 million.”

That price includes an earn-out which will depend on future performance of the company. paidContent is owned by ContentNext and was founded by Publisher and Editor Rafat Ali in 2002.

With the motto,”The Economics of Content,” paidContent has been a pioneer in the online news space, doing high-quality reporting about online media and digital efforts by big media companies.

ContentNext has offices in Santa Monica, Calif., and Manhattan and operates several other sites, and also runs several conferences. The company had reportedly been raising funding of several million dollars recently to fuel more expansion.

But ContentNext’s only financial backer so far has been Alan Patricof’s Greycroft Partners, which invested an undisclosed amount in 2006.

Longtime digital media exec Larry Kramer is on its board and ContentNext recently hired media exec Nathan Richardson as its CEO. Sources said ContentNext would continue being run independently after the Guardian purchase.

This sale comes after the mid-May sale of Ars Technica, a much larger tech-focused site, to Condé Nast for a reported $25 million.

Some folks think that calls for action just plain cheesy, but they work. Here are three simple reasons for their effectiveness.

1. Usability

If your page is designed well, with little distractions, a callout will gain the attention of the customers - making it obvious where they can click to navigate, download, register, etc. There’s nothing worse than getting a visitor’s attention, then losing them because they don’t know where to click next.

2. Options

Just as important, visitors will often come to your site because they landed there from a search, it’s important to provide them a path to continue your relationship. They may have found what they are looking for, but offering them something else can keep them coming back!

3. Curiosity

There’s a certain percentage of users who just like to click on stuff. Providing a nice bold callout can provide them with the target they’re looking for. Additionally, it could bring you a new sale.

If a call to action with a bold callout isn’t on your check list when creating a website or email, be sure to add it today.

I love outdoor life and camping is very often part and parcel of it. When you camp, choosing a tent becomes an art. The most ideal weight for those who back pack or canoe camp is to have the tent weighing below below 10 lbs.

Aside from weight, fabric is also important as this decides the tent cost and quality. A thread count of 130 means that, per square inch, there are about 70 threads running one way, 60 the other. The higher the thread count, the lower the fabric weight, the better the tent will hold out the elements.

Spun-polyester sidewalls contribute to weight reduction in construction. Many tent fabrics behave like raincoats and are treated to resist water.

Also, look out for an additional strip of webbing at the Eaves and main corner seams, this will add strength to the seams and helps the tent keep its proper shape. In most areas, insect protection is as important as protection from the elements. A sewn-in floor and mosquito door are definite quality factors. Good ventilation is equally important.

If you are looking for tents, I recommend this site, Outfitter Warehouse, as they offer the widest selection possible. Their product list includes wall tents, canvas tents, spike tents, range tents, hunting tents, tent frames, hunting stoves, wall tent stoves, wood camp stoves, outdoor wood burning stoves, and accessories.

The products are supplied directly from the leading brands in the industry, for example, Cylinder Stoves, Montana Canvas, Kwik Kamp, Reliable Tent, Kni-Co, Sims Stoves, and Riley Stoves.

I will be buying wall tents from them for my next camping trip. If you are interested, click the link to find out more.

Here are some tips to recycle your cloth towels:

* Consider darker or patterned towels to hide stains.
* Use a clean towel on stainless steel and windows. Any grease will leave streaks.

I will admit there’s one reason to keep paper towels in your home. If you have pets you my want to consider a roll, but make sure you and your family know that cleaning up “accidents” is the only time they are acceptable.

And please make sure the paper towels you keep around the house are made from recycled materials.

By switching to cloth towels you’ll save yourself money, wasted trees, additional landfill usage, and all the energy needed to produce paper.

Are you using lots of paper towels? Do you know how many trees are chopped off to make those towels?

It is a pity paper towels, once stained with food or cleaning products aren’t recycled. Try picking up a few sets of dishtowels to replace your addiction to the paper variety.

For a very small investment you can supply your home with enough wiping power to last several years. Make sure you have enough so that when your towel gets dirty you can dump it in the wash and start fresh with another.

You can use a dishtowel to clean up just about any mess in your home. Forget about which paper product picks up quicker, or absorbs more. A cloth towel will always do a better job.

Microsoft Corp is set to cut the price of its best-selling Xbox 360 Pro model with the 20 gigabyte hard drive to $299 from $349. This will happen over the weekend before the video game industry’s biggest trade show, E3.

A price cut has been widely reported by popular video game blogs and technology Web sites. Many posted snapshots of flyers from various retailers advertising the $299 price. Microsoft refused to comment on this issue.

Microsoft last cut the price of the Xbox Pro in August, from $399 to $349, prior to the release of “Halo 3″ the following month.

A cut to $299 makes the Xbox 360 Pro $100 less than Sony Corp’s PlayStation 3 with a 40 gigabyte hard drive. Microsoft is locked in a three-way competition with Nintendo’s Wii and the PlayStation 3, which comes with a high-definition Blu-ray video player.

Price cuts from Nintendo and Sony seem unlikely. Nintendo’s $249 Wii is still in short supply at many retailers, while Sony has said it aims to turn its video game business profitable this year, making a cut hard to swallow.

Lucky the New Zealanders! They were the first in the world to grab the much hyped iPhone 3G on Friday when three stores opened just after midnight.

Shoppers keen to be among the first to get the new Apple smart phone queued in the main cities of Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch in cold winter temperatures.

Enthusiasm for the new iPhone in New Zealand was tempered by the expensive calling contracts linked to the discounted price for the phone. The cheapest price for the new model iPhone is 199 dollars (150 US) but that price is tied to a two-year calling contract costing 250 dollars a month.

Many potential customers expressed outrage when they heard the pricing but it just reflects the high cost of mobile communications in New Zealand.

Toyota Motor Corp. will start producing the hybrid Prius in the U.S for the first time to meet customer demands for smaller, more fuel-efficient vehicles.

Customers can expect the first hybrid Prius to roll out in 2010, following a hybrid version of the Camry sedan. This is the first time the Prius, which has been on sale for more than a decade, will be built outside of Asia.

The Toyota Tundra pickup and Toyota Sequoia sport utility vehicle are suspended from production because of declining demand. Toyota’s U.S. sales fell 21% in June compared with the year before, an even steeper decline than the industrywide slump of 18%.

Toyota’s moves follow production cuts at General Motors Corp. and other automakers. GM said last month it is cutting shifts, reducing assembly line speeds and temporarily idling seven factories because of declining consumer demand for truck-based vehicles.

Chrysler LLC also announced plans to close a minivan factory and cut a shift at a full-size pickup factory, while Ford has said it is cutting production for the rest of the year.
