Everyone is going gaga over 3D.. soon it could be a norm for gadgets.
Using the forward facing camera of the iPad 2, the guys at Engineering Human-Computer Interaction Research manage to design a way to track the position of users head in 3D, in real time.

Apps developers can adjust the display perspective with respect to your eyes, possibly giving you a 3D representation that moves when you do.

In theory this should also work with any phone with a forward-facing camera and a gyroscope, so get ready for Glasses-less 3D effect on iPads and smartphones soon.

Apple fans may wish to consider boarding Jetstar the next time they fly to Australia. This is because Jetstar has come up with an innovative idea of offering iPad (on trial basis) as their in-flight entertainment devices on selected domestic routes.

Customers would able to rent the device for only AUD 10 and enjoy all the pre-loaded contents inside it such as music, videos, e-book and also, games throughout their journey.

The allure of Apple products is really impressive. iPhone has now replaced Blackberry for corporate gifts and now airlines are using iPad for their in-flight entertainment. In fact, Apple iPad has sold 2 million iPads in under 2 months. No wonder Steve Jobs is smiling all the way to the bank.

Have you bought your iPad already? If yes, I am sure you are busy looking at iPad applications already. There are many iPad apps which fascinated me, though some are just replicates from iPhone but just tweaked to fit the larger screen of the iPad.

Below are some of my favorite iPad apps so far..

1. iWork for iPad (Pages, Numbers and Keynote)

iWork is the painstaking fruit of Apple’s labor as they try to ensure an easy and intuitive system. You can create new documents or open up existing document types (if they aren’t iWork files, you will have to convert them which take some time).

Pages is the word processing app which becomes super easy to use when paired with a bluetooth keyboard or Keyboard Dock. As for Keynote, it is like Powerpoint and allows you to create and edit slides for presentations. Numbers doesn’t have all the capabilities of Excel, but it is a good tool for viewing charts, graphs and spreadsheets.

2. Air Video for iPad

Air Video allows you to stream video from your PC or Mac to your iPad. The interface is intuitive and you can preconvert any clips you want (rather than realtime convert) with the touch of a button. Air Video will be also getting MP3 support very soon.

3. GoodReader for iPad

GoodReader is a good PDF reader for the iPhone and the iPad version is even better. What makes GoodReader special is that it can not only view local files including PDF, Word, Excel, PNG, TXT, JPEG, etc. but you can also download files from a URL or connect to a web server.

GoodReader handles large files well too (it can even unzip files) and you can download your Google Docs files for offline reading or to open in another application for easy editing.

4. Dragon for iPad

Dragon is an established name in voice recognition, for good reason. Their NautrallySpeaking engine actually lets you speak and records your voice with accuracy. Dragon can keep up with most sentences but may face problems if you start rattling off paragraphs or engage in conversations. Nevertheless, if you have important thoughts which deserve preserving but are too lazy to pen down, Dragon is the app for you.

5. Evernote for iPad

This is the Evernote you know and love in the iPhone, and Apple has made this app work superbly for the iPad too. Evernote is a service that lets you clip audio, video, text, images, etc. and save it to a central web repository. You can assign documents or files with tags for easy collections and organization.

You can also use Evernote to create voice notes, attach pictures and make edits to text documents. I love to use Evernote as a list maker that lets me jot down quick memos, lists, and to-dos. Evernote iPad app is superior to its iPhone counterpart.

This iPad app is so clean, fast and easy to use that it might just convince you to upgrade to the premium plan for $45 a year.

6. Weather Channel Max for iPad

The Weather Channel’s free iPad app is a must-download, as I like to know the weather when I plan my outings.You can scan a 36-hour and 10-day forecast in a tastefully animated page, then hop to radars, webcams and video clips with a single button press. With the weather expected to change in a volatile manner, the Weather Channel’s app is a necessity for me.

Besides the six iPad apps above, there are other useful apps such as ‘1Password’ which allow me to protect my passwords and important data. “Instapaper Pro” is another neat app which lets you keeps a tab on interesting articles which you have no time to read.

I am still exploring and adding iPad apps but I can’t keep up with all of them. What apps are you using right now?

Steve Jobs may be rejoicing over the exuberant market reaction to his Apple iPads. But he certainly didn’t expect a bunch of crazy teens to smash and break apart a US$500 iPad using a baseball bat.

iPads are cool but I am sure it didn’t come with an indestructible tag. I don’t know what got into these guys… maybe they regretted the purchase so much they just gotta destroy Apple’s latest gadget.

Keep your iPad safe, just in case there are copycat acts spawning across the country.

WTF… I am so embarrassed. While I am still fiddling with my iPad and referring to the user manual, here is a 2.5 year old kid feeling right at home with the iPad, despite it being her first encounter.

Even if she has used the iPhone before, I am amazed by how easy she navigated and exited the different apps. By the way, the spelling app which she uses to spell “lion” seems very useful. I will definitely recommend it to my neighbor’s kid to improve his English.

Will you let your kid play with an iPad at such a young age? I wouldn’t, without close supervision; who knows if the kid gets bored of the iPad or throws a tantrum, my expensive gadget could jolly well end up on the floor.
